Counseling Philosophy

Existential- Humanistic

The existential-humanistic perspective honors the subjectivity of conscious existence. As part of our subjective nature each individual struggles with self-awareness, basic freedom, social and intra-personal identity, the meaning of our life and death, and the anxiety associated with consciousness (Existential- Humanistic Institute, 2023). Together we will explore your deepest life’s predicaments along the polarities of self – society, love – transience, freedom – responsibility, meaning – absurdity, fear – transcendence, and belief – faith.

Person- Centered

The person-centered perspective supports that “a new therapy is created with each client” (Yalom, 1980, 2002). This perspective encourages client agency and collaboration within the therapeutic relationship. I have deep reverence and respect for our innate healing intelligence and embrace the archetype of the inner healer. I tend to my clients with radical empathy, non-judgment, and compassion, and strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where their process of individuation can unfold, and trust in their unique gifts is restored.

Transpersonal

The transpersonal perspective encourages an understanding of the role of spirituality in our lives, and exploration of our relationship with the cosmos. It is referred to as the “Fourth Force” in psychology and includes the exploration of the spiritual dimensions of our psyche (Grof, 2008). I am sensitive to the interrelatedness of mind, body, and spirit and approach my clients holistically; in other words, as bio-psycho-social-spiritual beings— several theoretical perspectives are integrated and adapted to meet each client’s unique needs, desires, and values.

Individual Therapy

I offer psychotherapy sessions for individuals by virtual appointment. In addition to serving the general population, I serve:

  • Veterans and Military Professionals
  • Astronauts and Space Industry Professionals
  • LGBTQIA+
  • Athletes and High Performers
  • Artists and Entrepreneurs
  • Mental Health Professionals
  • Teachers and Higher Education Students

I view each client as unique, dynamic, and worthy of support, understanding, and love. I see counseling as a collaborative process where the counselor and the client go on a journey together. At the peak of the experience, both are transformed.

My clients have reported experiencing a deepened sense of wholeness, enhanced connectedness to themselves and others, as well as a greater sense of meaning, purpose, gratitude, and appreciation for life.

Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest as a general sense of unease or as a response to specific events, life circumstances, and social, political, or environmental factors. This emotional state can often leave individuals feeling fearful.

Depression

Depression can cause us to withdraw from our loved ones and environment. Symptoms such as low mood, low self-esteem, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and a loss of interest in activities we once enjoyed can all be indicative of depression.

Grief

Grief is a natural response to loss and can involve challenging emotions, such as denial, shock, anger, guilt, and sadness. It can arise from experiencing heartbreak, a health-related illness, or the death of a loved one, and can be either acute or prolonged. Grief can be complicated by a variety of factors, obscuring the light in our lives.

Chronic Pain

At some point in our lives, we will all experience pain. Whether it’s physical or emotional discomfort caused by an illness, injury, or an upsetting event, chronic pain can be debilitating, and can significantly impact the quality of our lives.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are mental health conditions that can emerge from witnessing or experiencing a terrifying event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event– all of which can significantly affect an individual’s quality of life, making it crucial to seek appropriate support and treatment.

Life Transitions

Some seasons of life may be more challenging than others, and can impact our ability to cope. Sudden shifts in our routine, environment, or interpersonal dynamics can all have an effect on our mental health and well-being. During these transitions, a little support may be needed to re-establish a sense of agency, stability, and harmony in our lives.

EXistential Distress

As we move through our journey, questions about life and existence may emerge, and we may wonder “what is it all about?”. Existential distress can affect people on physical, personal, relational, spiritual, or religious levels, negating our sense of meaning and purpose in the world.

Psychedelic and Holotropic Integration

Psychedelic, Holotropic, and other self-transcendent experiences, such as the “Overview Effect” (White, 2023), can be life-changing. Support may be needed to integrate these experiences and the insights that often follow for personal growth, self-discovery, and healing.

Our Story

“Earthrise” is a portrait of Earth rising above the lunar horizon for a third time, and was captured by NASA Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders on December 24th, 1968.

Earthrise Counseling is a practice inspired by “Earthrise,” considered the most influential environmental photograph ever taken, as stated by Nature photographer Galen Rowell. It is guided by a perspective of compassion, emphasizing the understanding that we are all in this together.

At Earthrise Counseling, we believe that love, hope, healing, and connection are essential ingredients for personal and planetary transformation.

  • Telehealth Counseling

Telehealth counseling is an effective, convenient, and great way to receive quality mental health care. “Researchers looked at more than 60 studies and found that seeing a therapist virtually is just as effective as face-to-face sessions for most people with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD)” (UCLA Health, 2021).

  • A Full Earthrise

“This is the world’s first successful shooting of such a Full Earth-Rise. It was also very precious because it was one of only two chances in a year for the KAGUYA to capture a Full Earth-Rise when the orbits of the Moon, the Earth, the Sun and the KAGUYA are all lined up” (JAXA, 2008,…
